The Honorable Sylvester Mondubue “Greg” Grigsby
(Sunrise: October 15, 1950 – Sunset: August 9, 2025)
A Life of Service, Integrity, and Love
The Honorable Sylvester Mondubue “Greg” Grigsby, Liberia’s Minister of State for Presidential Affairs, passed away peacefully on August 9, 2025, in Houston, Texas, at the age of 74. He was lovingly surrounded by his devoted wife of 51 years, Cleopatra Sangay Dudley Grigsby, and their daughters, Diana and Scheagbe Mayumi “Umi.”
Born in Sinoe County on October 15, 1950, to Nyanabo and Numah Mondubue, Greg was adopted and raised by Harrison Grigsby Sr. and Diana Sylvia Grigsby (“Mama and Papa Heart”). From childhood, he was shaped by values of faith, discipline, public service, and devotion to family. A bright and principled student at the College of West Africa (CWA), he served as senior monitor, mentored peers, and earned the affectionate nickname “Greggo,” later shortened to “Greg.” While at CWA, he met Cleopatra, who would become his wife, and began a lifelong friendship with Joseph Nyumah Boakai, future President of Liberia.
Greg’s dedication to integrity was evident early on. Selected by President William R. Tolbert as Liberia’s first student representative to travel abroad, he returned from his trip and handed back unspent per diem funds to the government, setting a precedent of honesty that would define his public life.
After earning a B.S. in Chemistry from Cuttington College, Greg represented Liberia in various capacities. In 1979, a position was created for him as Deputy Minister for International Cooperation, followed by service as Assistant Minister for Economic Affairs. He also became the first Liberian recipient of a Japanese government scholarship, earning his M.S. in Economics from the University of Tsukuba.
His career bridged diplomacy, private enterprise, and journalism. He served as Ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg, the European Union, and the African, Caribbean, and Pacific Secretariat, where he successfully negotiated the restoration of Liberia’s voting rights during the civil war. In exile during Liberia’s conflict, he worked with the New York City Housing Authority and later the Fairfax County Housing Authority in Virginia, always keeping people, rather than titles, at the center of his service.
Returning to Liberia in 2006, Greg served as Superintendent of Sinoe County, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, and ultimately Minister of State for Presidential Affairs from 2024 until his passing, under President Boakai, who called him “a pillar of integrity in public service.” Over his lifetime, he faithfully served several Liberia Presidents, President Tolbert, President Sawyer, President Sirleaf, and President Boakai.
For his lifetime achievements, Greg was honored with Liberia’s Grand Band of the Order of the Star of Africa, Haiti’s Chevalier of the National Order of Merit, and knighthood in the Order of the Pioneers of Liberia. A devout United Methodist, he lived with humility, generosity, and quiet strength, mentoring countless young leaders.
He is survived by his wife, daughters, grandchildren, siblings, nieces, nephews, colleagues, and friends worldwide. The family has established the Sylvester Mondubue Grigsby Scholarship for Liberians attending the College of West Africa. From student leader to senior statesman, his life was a rare blend of intellect, principle, and unwavering love for Liberia.

It is with heavy hearts and profound sorrow that I join my fellow countrymen to bid farewell to one of Liberia’s finest statesmen, Hon. Sylvester M. Grigsby, who departed this life on August 9, 2025. His passing is not just a loss to the nation, but a deep personal loss to all who had the honor of knowing him, working with him, and learning from him.
Hon. Grigsby was more than a public servant — he was a leader of extraordinary vision, a man of uncompromising integrity, and a true intellectual force in the corridors of government and diplomacy. As Minister of State for Presidential Affairs, he served with diligence, humility, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
Those of us who worked alongside him knew him as a man who could spot a flaw in communication within seconds — a testament to his sharp mind, meticulous attention to detail, and mastery of language. He held himself — and others — to the highest standards, not out of pride, but out of a deep respect for the responsibilities entrusted to us by the Liberian people.
Hon. Grigsby was both a teacher and a guide. He believed in nurturing talent and was never too busy to mentor the next generation of public servants. His guidance was firm but fair, and always wrapped in wisdom that reflected a life devoted to service, justice, and national progress.
He approached governance not as a means of power, but as a sacred duty. In an era where integrity is too often compromised, Hon. Grigsby stood tall as a beacon of honesty, discipline, and courage. His legacy will live on — not just in the offices he occupied, but in the lives he touched, the reforms he championed, and the smile he alway wear when speaking with his subordinates.
To his wife and family, I extend our deepest condolences 💐 . Hon. Sylvester M. Grigsby- even in death, I say thank you. Thank you for your life of service, for your brilliance, and for your unwavering belief in the promise of a better Liberia.
May your soul rest in perfect peace.

On behalf of the children of the late Harvey John & Mai Vanpelt Grigsby, we extend our heartfelt sympathy, to Aunty Cleo, Diana, Umi and all the family in the loss of Uncle Sylvester. As small children, our father shared so many great memories of himself with Uncle Greg, Uncle Isaac, our late Uncle David; at home with Borbor Harrison and Teeta Diana. So many great memories were shared to us about this amazing man of God. To continue this tribute would take up too much space to write and be redundant. Thanks Uncle Gregg for all your years of loving the family, and for service to the citizens of Liberia and those in the diaspora. We love you and know you are resting in peace.
The Sinoe County Association in the Americas, Inc., extends deepest condolences to Mrs. Cleopatra Grigsby, the children, and the rest of the bereaved family including the citizens of Sinoe County and Liberia at large for the loss of a husband, father, brother, uncle, cousin, family man and a public servant. Hon. Grigsby demonstrated unwavering dedication to public service for most of his life. As we mourn the loss of this statesman, let us take comfort in knowing that his legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched. May his soul rest in peace and his memory inspire us to work harder for a brighter future of Liberia.
On behalf of our late Father, Edward J Wreh Sr, who was a very close friend to Mr Sylvester Grisby’s sibling, the late Hannibal Grisby, we extend our heartfelt sympathy to his wife and family for his home going.

Now the laborer’s task is o’er;
Now the battle day is past;
Now upon the farther shore
Lands the voyager at last.”

“Goodnight sweet prince; and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest”. Rest in peace Greg.
I write in solemn remembrance to honor the life and legacy of a truly extraordinary man—our sponsor, our boss, and a devoted servant of the nation, who served with distinction as Minister of State for Presidential Affairs.
His passing is a profound loss not only to those of us who had the privilege to work closely with him but to the entire nation he served with unwavering dedication, integrity, and vision. In every role he undertook, he demonstrated exceptional leadership, wisdom, and a deep commitment to the progress and well-being of his people.
To me, he was more than a leader—he was a guiding light, a mentor, and a father figure whose support and encouragement shaped our lives and careers. His belief in me for Nelly’s Dance and Music Academy inspired confidence, his example taught me resilience, and his kindness touched my heart.
Though he is no longer with us, his legacy endures—in the values he championed, the institutions he strengthened, and the countless lives he influenced. I honor his memory by carrying forward the principles he lived by: dedication, humility, and service to others.
Minister Sylvester Grigsby, may your soul rest in peace, and may we find comfort in the lasting impact of your remarkable life.
